Our final field is nearly complete 💗 It’s so tranquil, surrounded by utter beauty. All our grass is hand selected and been nurtured for almost a year. Our aim is to combine conservation and sustainable land management with horse welfare to ensure optimum health for horses. It’s the most perfect spot for our retired horses 🐴 #CrossTreesLivery #retirementyard #retiredhorses #fields #newforest #dorset #horsesuk #horsewelfare Our daughter is learning the ropes and already in love and obsessed with horses 😍 I hope she grows up to appreciate how much just being with them is enough ❤️ She is too young to understand the exhilaration of riding yet, although she loves to sit on her pony, but we love that she wants to cuddle, brush and feed the horses more than riding. She knows everyone’s name and empathises if they’re poorly. If we can instil those core values of caring for and spending time with them is just as important as riding; they are our friends, partners and loved ones; then she will respect them when she’s riding as she gets older. She’ll know all their lumps and bumps and be able to spot early when the horse doesn’t look ‘right’, such a skill for a young person to have. Along with learning boundaries the horses might set, seeing their space, reading their signals, all skills only really listening to them can teach. Looking after our horses is a family affair 💗 All our owners feel like part of the family, we’re here to support you and your family as well as your horse. What is Cushings? At Cross Trees we care for a high percentage of horses with Cushings, often they are diagnosed once they are with us. There are a number of symptoms to the disease, some are recognised by veterinary professionals as standard and others are non-standard and it’s the non-standard symptoms which we have noticed have become more prevalent over the last 6 years. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, supper… some of our horses are on meal plans which consist of 4 bespoke feeds a day. The reasons vary from having limited teeth so can’t eat enough grass or hay, to not being able to digest feeds at once. Some horses (particularly horses diagnosed with cushings) can get depressed at times and lose their appetite, so we are on hand to carefully entice them with a selection of different feeds. The days of ‘turning away’ horses is gone, particularly for injured and elderly horses.
